Headed to the Six (Without Any Woes)

Hey there, Toronto. It’s been a few months since I’ve seen you – but alas, I made my return this past weekend for a brief, barely-planned excursion up to the 416.

This was a very last-minute planned trip – literally, I planned this on Friday for that following weekend. After some searching, I found a hotel in Oakville, about 90 minutes from Buffalo and a short distance outside the metro area of Toronto itself. A rainy drive on Saturday afternoon with stops at a Walmart in Fort Erie, a Wendy’s in Niagara Falls and Oakville Place eventually led us (my fiancé and I, that is) to the Country Inn & Suites by Carlson.

I will disclaimer here that I paid only $15 for this room. I had a nifty Hotels.com reward to use, which took care of everything but the taxes, and it was great! The room was spacious enough, simple and nothing extravagant, but it served its purpose well enough. The staff was friendly, and I loved the “country” decor in the lobby. Parking and wifi were both free (always key points IMO) and there was also breakfast included. I didn’t eat a lot – I wasn’t feeling great – but there was enough and it looked halfway decent.

We spent Saturday evening at the Cineplex Cinemas Oakville and VIP, where we saw the new Mission Impossible movie. Now, I paid a pretty penny for the movie tickets and really didn’t get it. Sure, the VIP lounge to sit in before the movie was cool – but I’m not that high-strung that I require that sort of thing. The in-seat food service was probably the best part, but the menu was incredibly limited and the food wasn’t great (hello, please tell me how I’m supposed to eat chicken fingers COATED with Buffalo sauce in a pitch-black movie theater, thx). If I ever go back, I’ll get regular movie food in the lobby.

Sunday, after checking out of the hotel around 12, we headed to Toronto!

Sodus Point, NY and the George Eastman House

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Each summer for the past several years, I’ve gone on a short (usually two-day-long) vacation/trip with my mom and two of my aunts. In years past, we’ve gone to several Finger Lakes, including most recently Skaneateles, last summer. We’ve also gone to Conesus Lake, Seneca Lake, etc.

This year, we did something a little different. Instead of visiting another Finger Lake (which, for the record, I hope to visit all of in my lifetime), we headed out to Sodus Point, New York. It’s about 115 miles from Buffalo, northeast of Rochester.

But as per usual, we made a few stops along the way. Our first stop: Don’s Original Restaurant and Pub in Penfield, NY. It seemed like a nice enough place, with a decent variety on the menu. We ended up sitting outside, as it was an absolutely beautiful day. My lunch fare: a turkey club wrap (minus the bacon, of course), with macaroni and cheese. Yum!

100 Things To Love About Buffalo, NY

Today – July 16 – is affectionately known as #716Day in the Buffalo, NY area. It’s a wonderful day for Buffalonians and ex-pats alike to celebrate this fair city and all the incredible things it has to offer. As someone who’s lived in Buffalo my whole life – 24 years – I simply have so much love for this city. It’s my home, and even on those days when it seems less than perfect, it’s where I feel like I belong.

What better day than today to share my “Buffalove” with all of you?

So — here it is: my list of 100 things to love about Buffalo, NY.

The Next Big Adventure

This past weekend, I set off on what could surely be the biggest adventure of my life: moving away from home.

Actually, I don’t like those words… “moving away from home.” Anywhere you live can be home, and I hope that the new place I’ve just moved into will be home — a place where I can feel comfortable, warm, safe, and happy.

More appropriately speaking, I set off on what should be the biggest adventure of my life so far: moving out on my own, away from my parents.

Up until now, I’ve lived my entire life with a member of my family. My mother, father and sister lived together (and myself, of course) for the first near-15 years of my life in house #1. Then it was my mom, sister and I in house #2…. then mom and I in house #3, and house #4.

Now, it’s me, in #5, moving in with my fiancé. It’s both of our first times really living on our own, so it’s quite an adventure. It’s scary and exciting, nerve-wracking and absolutely terrifying, joyous and optimistic and positive. I’ve felt so many emotions leading up to this, and now that it’s real, I’ve hit that moment of “Whoa…. that actually happened.”

It’s been three days. It doesn’t feel real sometimes.

One thing I’ve been wanting to write about lately is this.

In my life up until this point, I’ve lived in four different places.

All in Buffalo, and all within a 1.1 mile radius.

Also within that radius: my elementary school (now closed); the Catholic Church I attended for a good portion of my life (also closed); the pizzeria we always went to, owned by some of the friendliest guys, who knew us by name and never failed to have a smile on their face. I know the square blocks where I used to do walkathons as a kid in elementary school; the other pizzeria where I worked my “first job” for about three days. The storefront that always used to hold a seasonal Niagara Chocolates store, but is now vacant 365 days a year.

That small radius – which would have been narrowed down even further, to .59 miles if house #3 wasn’t in there – also contains a lot of memories for me. From elementary school memories of computer class and trekking over to the nearby community gym for physical education (weather permitting, of course) to that time a tenant who lived above us in house #2 had a prairie dog as a pet; from the days when we had to leave house #1, to the trick-or-treating nights, Halloween parades and more…. I’ve lived so much of my life in that area.

It’s not like I’m moving across the country; I’m not. I’m still in Buffalo, about six miles outside of that radius now. Instead of living on the east side of the city, I live on the north side. My commute into work comes from a completely new direction. I’ve got the beauty of things like Delaware Park and Forest Lawn Cemetery nearby; I’m surrounded by art museums, hip restaurants and a great local music scene.

I get all of that, plus the independence and adulthood that come with this new adventure. Of course, that includes a lot more responsibility, too – but it’s not overwhelming, at least not yet. I’ve spent the last few days unpacking and decorating. I cooked my first real dinner last night, and we’re still alive and well this morning, so clearly I did alright. I have my own keys, to my own apartment, mailbox and storage area. I’m building (or at least trying) my own life, one small piece at a time.

It’s a big adventure. I know it won’t always be easy, but I’m going to enjoy it as best I can.

Top Five Memories of New York City

12769_10201786581610316_1488010543_nExactly two years ago, I hopped a Megabus to visit NYC for the first time. It took me over 22 years to visit The Big Apple, but it was well worth the wait — and I’ve since returned a few times, having made the eight-hour journey five times in the past two years. (That doesn’t include a bus layover in NYC on the way back from DC, either.)

Each visit, I’ve tried to see at least one new thing; I know there are a great variety of things to do and see in NYC, and though I haven’t been since September 2014, I know I’ll return someday soon. Either way, I’ll always cherish some of the best memories I have from my NYC trips of the past.

Today, I thought it’d be neat to look back at some of my past NYC trips and pick out five of my best memories from those great adventures:
