Q&A: The Photographic Interview

Doing a Q&A: The Photographic Interview has been on my bucket list for…. well, as long as I can remember. This one came via http://sh1ft.org/ years and years and years ago (2007, maybe?) and now, some nine years later, I’ve finally gone and done it.

Take 1 photograph as your answer to each of the 10 questions below:

My First Rowing Class (Also, My FitBit Is Great)

IMG_4761In my continuing effort to try new things, especially in the exercise world, I went ahead and booked my first-ever rowing class at BikeOrBar this past weekend.

Did I mention it was at 9 am? On a Saturday morning?

To be fair, I’m pretty much the kind of person who can never sleep in, regardless of it being a day off from work, so naturally, I was awake before 8 am anyways. But I can’t really say I’ve ever done such a workout so early in the morning. (And yes, I know there are people out there who do spin or rowing or other exercise classes at 6 am. I can’t.)

But alas here I was, 8 am and chowing down on a bowl of Special K cereal to fuel my upcoming workout, then headed out to BikeOrBar. It was my first non-spin class there, and it honestly was a little different from what I was expecting – but not in a bad way.

My First POUND Fit Class …. and More

Continuing my whole “let’s try new things” life, I signed up for my first POUND Fit class last week.

For those who don’t know what POUND Fit is, let me explain. According to their ~official website,~ POUND is “the world’s first cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums.”

For the class – mine lasted an hour – you use Ripstix, lightly weighted drumsticks specifically engineered for exercising. It “combines cardio, conditioning & strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements.”

Prior to my class, I did watch a few videos online, and I knew that I was in for a good workout.

On Trying New Things…..

At some point, I realized something: I’m out of shape.

Okay, quite frankly, it was the day I went to the doctor and didn’t like the number on the scale or the body-mass index number it left me with. And yes, I know, that number does not define me, but I know I’m not in the healthiest shape, I don’t exercise nearly as much as I probably should, and I don’t eat as healthy as I should.

So I’ve decided to try and start changing that. I know it won’t be easy. Habits are difficult to break, especially when you’re used to a certain routine, or eating certain foods, or what have you. But I want this — and so I’ve begun.

Book Recommendations – Feminism & More

I thought an appropriate segue into revisiting this blog would be to discuss some of the books I’ve read recently, how I came to pick them up , and my overall reflections once I’ve finished them.

Many of these books discuss feminism, with a few of them coming onto my reading list as part of Emma Watson’s feminist book club, Our Shared Shelf. The others I mostly picked up on my own, just out of pure searching, or recommendations from others on Goodreads.

Oh, and the best part? I picked up all of these at my local library! FOR FREE! I can’t overstate the importance of libraries and how incredible they are. If you’re interested in a book and perhaps can’t afford to purchase the books, or don’t want to, your local library system is a wonderful resource! (Can you tell I work at a library?)

Without further ado – here are the books.
