Reflecting on a Year: Progress

Progress.

From Middle English, Anglo-French and Latin roots, it’s a word that, according to Merriam-Webster, means “the process of improving or developing something over a period of time.”

For me, it represents how far I’ve come over the past few years.

I can only speak for myself, but I know sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in everything in my life. It’s easy to focus on the bad things, the parts of my life that maybe aren’t going as well as I’d hoped, and forget all the progress I’ve made and how far I’ve come.

I sat down and made a list of all the things I’ve done in the last year, and it’s a decent list. The places I’ve gone, the personal achievements that I’ve added, and just the small, simple ways my life has changed, grown and developed over the last 365 days.

Doing that made me realize how far I’ve come and how much I’ve accomplished in the last year. And if I can accomplish all of that in just a year, think about how much MORE I can do in three years, or five, or ten. Think of how much I still have in my future, how much can change and how all the things that make me sad right now will be gone before I know it. It’s great fuel to keep me going even when I feel like giving up sometimes.

For my reference, here’s a few of the things on my list from the past year:

  • Got a full-time job, with health insurance, paid vacation, etc.
  • Found a healthcare provider as well as a dentist.
  • Visited several new places – including New York City, Washington, Virginia, and Columbus.
  • Seen several performers in concert, including Demi Lovato, Darren Criss and Selena Gomez.
  • Traveled through parts of four new states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.
  • Published my first freelance piece in a local newspaper.

And that’s not the whole list, but it’s a pretty good one. And although some of those things may not seem that important, and I left off some of the more personal accomplishments, overall…. I feel good.

I feel like I’ve come far in the past year, and I should focus on the things I have accomplished, not the ones I haven’t. I’ll continue to focus on moving forward and making progress in all aspects of my life, and I’m going to try my best not to let anything get me down.

A New Adventure: Washington, D.C.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

After getting through some little mishaps that tried to steer us off the course, my mother and I eventually hit the road for a smooth ride to Washington, D.C. – our first trip to the nation’s capital.

Originally, our plan had to been to take Megabus (just $20 for both of us!) on Wednesday night to D.C. It would have been an overnight trip, and we should have arrived in DC around 9:40 a.m. on Thursday. Mother Nature had something else in mind for us, as a blizzard hit the Buffalo area on Wednesday, thus cancelling our bus.

But fear not, for Greyhound saves the day! I was thankfully able to book us tickets for Thursday to DC. It meant spending more money and 14.5 hours on buses, including three transfers…. but we knew it would be worth it in the end.

Another Adventure to the Big Apple

It took me 22 and a half years to make my first trip to NYC; that happened last June, when I went for a day-long excursion with my mom. (It was also her first trip.) Having a tendency to be a bit of a wanderlust, I booked a trip for us to return to the city in April, where we’ll be attending a Broadway show and a New York Rangers game.

Of course, that wasn’t enough to satisfy me…. so in a spur-of-the-moment decision back in late, late December, I bought a pair of Megabus tickets to visit NYC in February. I figured, hell, I’ll find SOMEONE to go with me, and they were at a reasonable price, so… why not! I asked my friend Liz to go with me and… that was that.

So at 3:15 am this past Saturday, my best friend and I hopped a bus to the Big Apple for a day-long adventure and a gorgeous day in an incredible city.

Day 30- Write a poem employing extended metaphor to illustrate the experience of the last thirty days.

My writing is like the winter;

It is not always present, nor always fair,
At times it may seem too extreme,
The wind ripping away every fabric of your being,
Harsh, aggressive, gritty, tough.
At times it may seem pretty,
Like the white new snow fallen down,
Soft, beautiful, yet cold to the touch.
Sometimes it is here, other times it is gone,
Sometimes you may not notice it at all.
It is a rebirth of sorts,
A chance to grow,
But also to die,
To live, to love, to jump, to fall,
Sometimes you may play in it like a child, youth,
Other times the cold is so bitter that even adults should shy away.
But through this past 30 days,
I have forced myself to walk through the wind, the snow, the bitter cold,
So that I shall meet the doors to the building that allows me inside,
This escape, this warmth, this hope that has been brought to me.
